A Luba bowstand, Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo, late 19th/early 20thC (+) Shaped like a female figure, carved in wood, it rests on a modern base and stand. Bow stands were prominent symbols of royal power and among the most sacred and prestigious insignia of the Luba people and some Luba-influenced peoples. The bow stand presents the victory of Kalala Ilunga (one of the most important ancestors in Luba history) over bad spirits. It was used during throne ceremonies and other important occasions.
